Strengths Focused Team Development

Here is a development programme for a team that could be run across a period of approximately 6 months:

Month 1 (whole day event):
  Give team members an overview of the 6 month programme
  Identify recent successes and challenges for the team
  Clarify the team purpose & key goals both from an internal and external perspective
  Following their one to one strengths debrief before the event, identify the individual & collective strengths in the team, & any important weaknesses
  Identify actions to enhance the team’s ability to play to it’s strengths
Month 2 (half-day event):
  Identify the characteristics of a High Performing Team
  Clarify the results of a self-assessment by the team against a model of a high-performing team. (eg the 6 Step Model described in Ch 15)
  Analyse the strengths in the current performance of the team, any critical weaknesses, and identify areas for development
  Identify behaviours for effective team work
  Create a clear plan for enhancing team effectiveness
  Identify a process for gaining stakeholder feedback on the team performance
Month 3 (half-day event):
  Identify the results of stakeholder feedback on the performance of the team
  Celebrate and analyse the strengths of the team identified by stakeholders and how this aligns with the team’s internal perception of its strengths
  Use a stakeholder mapping tool to analyse the current nature of stakeholder relationships
  Identify desired ‘Team Brand’ – how the team wants to be perceived by its stakeholders
  Identify the principles of effective influencing and relationship building
  Create a plan to enhance existing stakeholder relationships.
Month 4 (half-day event):
  Celebrate and analyse actions and achievements taken since the previous event What strengths were on show? Any significant weaknesses?
  Based on exploration at previous events, focus on key elements of team-working which have already progressed, and those that will further enhance       the success of the team. (eg Communication, Decision-making, problem-solving, conflict management, team meetings)
  Agree key actions ahead of final session
Month 5 (half-day event):
  Celebrate and analyse actions and achievements taken since the previous event. What changes in team-working have been achieved. How have they       incorporated individual strengths?
  Based on exploration at previous events, focus on key elements of team-working which have already progressed, and those that will further enhance       the success of the team. (eg communication, decision-making, problem-solving, conflict management, team meetings etc)
  Agree key actions ahead of final session, and how further diagnostics will be done
Month 6 (half-day event):
  Celebrate and analyse achievements across the whole programme
  Analyse results of a second team self-assessment (and stakeholder assessment)
  Highlight achievements achieved in team-working across the programme.
  Clarify how the achievement s will be built on, following the end of the current programme
